BREVARD, N.C. - Bailey Varley scored one goal and assisted on Carrilea Potter's game-winner as the Brevard College Tornados edged Coker College, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in NCAA Women's Soccer action. With the win, Liz Stojetz's team moves to 2-1, while the Cobras fall to 0-2 on the young season.

The Tornados grabbed control of the game at the opening kick-off and gained the lead in the 9th minute. Jessica Guadagno played a high ball over the Coker backline which Varley chased down and booted past Cobra keeper Chelsea Beetch to make the score 1-nil. The goal is the freshman's third in as many games; she is the only Tornado to score in every match.

The Tornados would lose momentum following their goal, however, and a resilient Coker team made them pay. Kathryn Friedmann crossed the ball into the box from the left side of the field in the 18th minute, and Bridget Clark banged home the equalizer, and the tally read 1-1. Neither team found the back of the net before the half, and the squads went to intermission deadlocked.

A rejuvenated Tornado side would regain control of possession after the halftime break but had few scoring opportunities to show for it until the 74th minute. That's when Varley took off on a long run down the right side of the field. Her cross deflected off the fingertips of Beetch and to the foot of Potter, who drilled it home to give BC a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

The Tornados outshot Coker 20-10 and put 14 on goal. Beetch was very busy in goal, making 12 saves while allowing the two goals. Tornado keeper Sydney Douglas was beaten just once and made a pair of saves.

Brevard returns to action Monday when they face Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. The Cobras will travel to USC Aiken Tuesday for a 5 p.m. match.
