Hartsville, SC- The Coker women’s soccer team came out and struck early Wednesday night winning 7-1 against the Fighting Koalas of Columbia College in college soccer.

The Cobras first goal came when freshman Emily Fifield/ Atlanta, GA, took a corner kick, which bounced it off sophomore Brooke Basham/ Longs, SC, for Basham’s first college goal. The Koalas came right back, however, and tied it at one on a blast from Allison Lord, but that’s as close as they came to the Cobras. Freshman Kathryn Friedmann/Hendersonville, TN, scored next for the Cobras on a breakaway off a pass from junior Megan Shaver/Athens, TN. Friedmann would score again two minutes later, unassisted, and then again three minutes before the end of the half, assisted by Fifield, capping off her night with her first college hat trick. Between Friedmann’s goals Coker tallied its fourth goal, by having a ball deflected in off a Columbia defender.

In the second half Coker added two insurance goals, one by Shaver off the left post, assisted by fellow junior Cara Durrance/Atlanta, GA. The other goal came from sophomore Shelly Heinzelman/Chapin, SC, off a direct kick over the goalkeepers head.

With this win the Cobras are now 3-1 for the year as they prepare to start conference play this Saturday at 1 p.m. versus Lees-McRae College at the Coker College Soccer Field.
