HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker defeated Limestone College 3-1 Wednesday on Senior Night in women’s collegiate soccer.  The Cobras improve to 2-10-3 overall and 2-7 in the CVAC, but the Saints drop to 6-11 and 3-6 in conference.

Coker jumped ahead at the 14:50 mark when sophomore Megan Shaver/Athens, TN redirected a cross by classmate Cara Durrance/Atlanta, GA to the near post.  The Cobras protected their lead well but had a lapse in the final minutes of the first period.  Cathy Zgraggen chased down a bouncing ball in the box and headed it past an on-rushing Jacque Stewart/Cumming, GA for the 1-1 tie.

The Cobras answered only nine minutes into the second half with a goal from freshman Stephanie Foster/Stone Mountain, GA.  Shaver hit a hard shot that the keeper blocked but Foster pounced on the rebound and gave CC a 2-1 lead.

Coker received a little help to put the match away as the clock hit 80 minutes.  A cross by Durrance deflected off a sliding Saint defender where keeper Liz Eichorn smothered it.  The ball barely crossed over the goal line and the Cobras were awarded the goal by the lines judge for a 3-1 lead.  CC defended well in the last ten minutes to preserve the victory.

Limestone out-shot Coker 16-15 and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.  The feisty Cobras didn’t let that stop them, however, and took the win with a solid effort by Stewart between the pipes.  Stewart made eight saves to match the eight by Eichorn.

Coker travels to Belmont Abbey on Saturday, October 30, for a 2:00 PM match-up with the Crusaders.
