HARTSVILLE, SC – An inspired Coker squad pulled together to earn their first victory over the season, 3-2 over Erskine Saturday afternoon in women’s collegiate soccer.  The Cobras improve to 1-9-2 overall and 1-6 in the CVAC, while EC falls to 3-10, 2-5 in the conference.

Freshman Monica Winn/Chapin, SC put CC out front in the 29th minute on an assist from sophomore Andrea Bustamante/Atlanta, GA.  Bustamante layed the ball off to Winn, who made one cut and chipped it in over Erskine’s Shantika Britt.

The Flying Fleet quickly answered on a great header by Esther Udall in the 33rd minute.  Udall hammered the cross from Ashley Owens into the net for a 1-1 score.  The teams came out of the break tied but Winn, a converted goal keeper, struck again early in the period.

This time she found herself open in front of goal and she curled a low shot by the keeper and in the goal.  EC rallied a second time and in the 67th minute Jodie Locke made the Cobras pay for a foul just outside the box.  The free kick was tapped over to Locke, who hit a beautiful arching ball into the opposite top-corner of the net to even the score at 2-2.

Erskine put more pressure on the home team in the following minutes but Coker’s resilience paid off in the 79th minute.  Freshman Stephanie Foster/Stone Mountain, GA sent a clever through ball past the EC defense and sophomore Megan Shaver/Athens, TN calmly beat Britt one-on-one for the game winner.

The Fleet out-shot Coker 21-6 and held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.  Junior Jacque Stewart/Cumming, GA made the difference for CC with 15 saves, including 10 in the opening period, and earned the win.  Britt made two saves for Erskine.

Coker will next face St. Andrews in Laurinburg, NC on Wednesday, October 20, at 2:00 PM.
