Wunderlich Qualifies for Nationals

PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Coker wrestling team completed competition at the NCAA Super Regional II on Saturday (Feb. 26). PJ Wunderlich qualified for the national tournament by finishing in third place in the 157 pound weight class.

Stephen Spitko picked up a win over Rylee Billings of King at 125 pounds by decision (8-4), before falling to Billings in the fifth place match due to medical forfeit. Hunter Ross won his first match at 133 pounds over David Medina of King by decision (10-5) and finished in sixth place. At 141 pounds, Omar Armengol earned an opening round victory over Mount Olive's Spencer Leonhardt by decision (9-7) and earned sixth place as well.

Bryan Jones won his first round match at 149 pounds over Lander's Randy Myers by decision (6-4). PJ Wunderlich was the top performer of the day at 157 pounds for the Cobras as he went 5-1 on the day, including a win over Newberry's Nolan Wheeler by decision (5-3) in the third place match to clinch his qualifying spot for the national tournament. 

Corey Christie finished fifth at 165 pounds, as he won two matches, including the fifth place match over Connor Smith of Emmanuel (Ga.) by decision (10-7). Alex Miller earned two victories at 174 pounds, including one by fall over Markis Hill of Emmanuel (Ga.) at the three minute mark. Levi Kluttz earned a win by decision at 197 pounds over Samari Suddeath of King (7-3). Hamilton Cooper rounded out the day with three wins at 285 pounds, including one by fall over Queens (N.C.) Josh Voelkel at the 3:49 mark.

Wunderlich has qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in St. Louis, MO. The Championships will take place March 11-12 and coverage can be found at www.cokercobras.com
