Poland Advances to Day Two of Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Coker College wrestling team traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to compete in the prestigious Midwest Classic on Saturday (Dec. 15). Chris Poland (133 pounds) advanced to the second day of the tournament with three victories, while John Watts (125 pounds), Bret Shurina (165 pounds), Brandon Mills (174 pounds), and Ramon Correa (285 pounds) collected wins at the tournament.

At 125 pounds, Watts collected two victories before being eliminated from the tournament. Watts began competition with an impressive fall in 4:39 over Lamont Wilson (Kentucky Wesleyan ). The freshman from Willacoochee, Georgia dropped his next match, but answered with a 15-9 decision over Richetshaye Puente (Tiffin University) in round two of the consolations. Watts fell in his following match to end his tournament.

Poland was defeated in his first match, but showed his resiliency by capturing victories in his next three matches at 133 pounds. The Eastern Michigan junior transfer picked up major decisions over Giuseppe Penzone (Tiffin University) and Emery Cline (Emmanuel), before earning a 7-3 decision over Alexis Soriano (Mercyhurst) in the third round of the consolations. Poland will continue his tournament tomorrow at 9 AM EST.

Correa was the final Cobra to record multiple victories on the day. The junior transfer wrestled tough for decisions over Joseph Foret (Wisconsin-Parkside) and Harrison Townsend (Northern State) prior to dropping two matches to be eliminated.
