Cobras Fall to Newberry in Tough Battle on Senior Night
The Coker College wrestling team fell to the Newberry College Wolves 23-19 on senior night in a tough battle to conclude their regular season schedule.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College wrestling team fell to the Newberry College Wolves 23-19 on senior night in a tough battle to conclude their regular season schedule. Coker won four of the nine matches wrestled this evening.
The Wolves built an early lead when they received a technical fall from Trung Duong and pins from Jordan Simpson and Timmy Martinez. Next, Bret Shurina stepped up for the Cobras and wrestled tough to earn a 16-5 major decision over the 5th ranked 149 pounder in Super Region Two in Tyler Wicken.
Coker received a forfeit at 157 pounds and Jordon Tague battled for a 10-5 decision over Nick Young to bring the Cobras within four points of the Wolves. Four near fall points off a tight cradle from Tague proved to be the difference in the 165 pound bout.
After dropping the 174 pound match, the Cobras bounced back with a narrow 3-2 decision from Jordon Garlow. The Coker 184 pounder used a blast double in the first period and held on to his lead for the victory.
Newberry took the 197 pound match by decision and Tyvon Leacock ended the dual meet on a high note for Coker with a 10-3 decision over Nick Weldon at 285 pounds. Leacock used a variety of attacks to score takedowns for the win.
The Cobras will prepare for post season wrestling leading up to the Super Region Two Tournament hosted by the University of Indianapolis on Feb. 24-25.
