Coker Wrestlers Go 2-1 at Newberry Duals
The Coker wrestling team picked up wins against Alderson-Broaddus and Darton at the Seventh Annual Newberry Duals.
NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Cobra wrestling team went 2-1 on Saturday (Dec. 7) at Seventh Annual Newberry Duals. Coker defeated Alderson-Broaddus and Darton State College, 20-19 and 27-13, respectively. The Cobras only loss of the day was to the regionally ranked No. 7 Lake Erie Storm, 30-18. With the wins, the Cobras improve to 4-1 in dual matches this season.
In a battle of first-year programs, the Cobras defeated Alderson-Broaddus 20-19. Gavin Perkins picked up the 5-4 decision at the 125-pound division, while Charlie Huff earned a 19-9 major decision at the 133-pound division. A 6-2 decision by Kevin Thompson in the 149-pound match, a win by forfeit for JD Dykes at 157-pound and a 7-3 decision by Robert Parland at the 197-pound division gave the Cobras the win.
Against Darton State College, Coker opened the match with four straight wins by Perkins (Dec. 6-4), Huff (Dec. 3-2), Rashad Cunningham (Dec. 7-1) and a pin by Thompson to take a 15-0 lead. A pin by Ellison Sanders in the 165-pound division and a pair of victories at the 197-pound division by Parland (Dec. 11-5) and at the 285-pound division by Austin Akins (Dec. 6-2), secured the 27-13 win for the Cobras.
In their final dual of the day, the Cobras jumped out to an early 18-3 lead against the Lake Erie Storm. Perkins and Cunningham picked up wins by forfeit at 125 and 141, while Thompson earned his second pin of the day at the 149-pound division. The Storm proceeded to win the final six straight matches to take home the 30-18 victory.
The Cobras will return to the mat on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Midwest Classic at the University of Indianapolis.
