Division I Matches Highlight Coker's Inaugural Wrestling Season
The Coker College wrestling program announced its schedule for its inaugural season on Monday.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College wrestling program announced its schedule for its inaugural season of competition this week. The 2013-14 schedule includes five home matches as well as three matches against Division I opponents.
"The schedule that we have been able to put together as a first-year program is very good," said head coach Cy Wainwright. "We will be facing some very good wrestling programs, and I feel it is going to help get our program going in the right direction right from the start. I am also thrilled to be hosting matches at home so the Coker and Hartsville communities will get a chance to experience the excitement of collegiate wrestling first hand."
The Cobras will open their 16-match season with a Blue and Gold Intersquad meet at home on Oct. 26. Coker's first official match of the season will be on Nov. 2 at The Citadel Open.
The Cobras will head to the UNC Pembroke Braves Open on Nov. 9 and then travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on NC State on Nov. 17.
After heading to Limestone College on Nov. 21, the Cobras will play host to St. Andrews University on Nov. 25. A pair of road matches highlights the month of December, as Coker travels to Newberry College for the Newberry Duals on Dec. 7 and to the Midwest Classic at the University of Indianapolis on Dec. 14-15.
After the new year, the Cobras will head back to Newberry for a match on Jan. 4 before hosting a tri-match featuring Coker, King University and Brewton Parker College. The Cobras will stay at home for their next two matches, hosting UNC Pembroke on Jan. 16 and Belmont Abbey on Jan. 21.
On Jan. 24 the Coker wrestlers will head to the Super Region Duals at Newberry, followed by a trip to Anderson University on Jan. 30.
The Cobras will hit the home stretch of their season with three matches in February starting with back-to-back to matches at Newberry on Feb. 8 and King on Feb. 9. They will then head to Fairfax, Va., to face Division I George Mason University in their final regular-season match of the season.
"This is going to be a great year for Coker wrestling," added Wainwright. "To be able to take on Division I schools like The Citadel, NC State and George Mason, as well as some of the top DII programs like Newberry, Indianapolis and UNC Pembroke is really going to help build our team and make us stronger for the future."
With 30 plus wrestlers making up the inaugural Coker wrestling team, Wainwright is confident his team will have the depth to be very competitive this season.
"We will have a learning curve, like all first-year programs do, but I feel that we are definitely going to put Coker wrestling on the map this season."
