Coker Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Converse on Senior Day

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Coker University women's lacrosse team defeated Converse 20-8 on Wednesday (Apr. 14) on Senior Day. 

Hannah Shuren opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just over two minutes in, before Converse flipped in one to tie the game at 1-1 four minutes in. Shuren would score again on the assist from Gabby Jessup to break the tie, starting a seven-goal scoring run for Coker. Jessup dished out an assist to Abby Gross before netting her first goal of the game. Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole notched a goal off the draw control before Meagan Gallagher registered a free position goal. Jessup scored on an assist from Shuren, followed by Shelby Hughes who scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Baronella-O'Toole to give the Cobras an 8-1 lead. The Valkyries would tally three straight goals, before Baronella-O'Toole stopped the run with another goal off the draw control to make it a 9-4 game. Converse chipped in another goal with six minutes left, before the Cobras closed out the first half with four straight goals. Baronella-O'Toole registered her hat trick goal on a free position attempt, followed by Gross who tallied a goal on the second assist from Shuren. Jessup assisted Gallagher on Coker's next goal, before notching her hat trick goal on a free position attempt for a 13-5 lead at the half.

Shuren would score on the man down to start the second half less than a minute into the period. Baronella-O'Toole caused a Valkyrie turnover and picked up the ground ball to find the twine for the 15-5 lead. Converse scored a goal before the Cobras responded with another scoring run. Shuren assisted Jessup a second time, before turning around and notching another goal. She would later assist Gallagher to make it an 18-6 game. In the final eight minutes, Converse would register another goal before Gallagher and Brooke Slone netted goals to bring the game to its final score.

Four different Cobras tallied four goals apiece. Shuren registered a season-best four assists, while Baronella-O'Toole won a season-high nine draw controls. Quyntessa Tyson led Coker with five caused turnovers, matching her career high. Abby Kellner picked up the win between the pipes, making six saves in the cage.
