Coker Women’s Lacrosse Falls Against Mars Hill on Sunday

HARTSVILLE, S.C- The Coker University women's lacrosse team fell to Mars Hill in overtime 15-14 on Sunday (Mar. 28).

The Lions jumped out on a six-goal run in the first 17 minutes of the game, before Hannah Shuren got the Cobras on the board with a free position goal. The junior would score another one before assisting Gabby Jessup on the next to make it a 6-3 game. 

After Mars Hill added to its lead, the Cobras would strike for two straight goals to get back in the game. Meagan Gallagher scored from Shuren with just over two minutes left, before Jessup scored unassisted for Coker's final goal of the half. Coker trailed 9-5 at the half. 

Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole scored two consecutive free position goals to start the second half. Mars Hill netted one back, before Shuren dropped in two straight goals to make it a one-goal game. Baronella-O'Toole scored another free position goal to tie the game, before breaking the tie with another to give Coker its first lead of the game at 11-10. 

Both teams tallied back and forth goals in the final 15 minutes of the second half. Shuren tallied her fifth goal of the game on the assist from Gallagher. Jessup notched in another goal before Alexis Zegan chipped in her first goal of the game on a free position shot.

Shuren finished the day with five goals and two assists for a team-high seven points. Baronella-O'Toole finished with four goals, followed by Jessup with a hat trick. Zegan and Gallagher notched one goal apiece. Baronella-O'Toole also won seven draw controls for Coker. Goalie Abby Kellner notched 19 saves and four ground balls. Six different Cobras caused one turnover each. 

The Cobras are back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 31) as they host Converse for a non-conference matchup at 3:00 p.m. at the Coker Athletic Field. Video and live stats will be available at www.cokercobras.com.
