Coker Women's Lacrosse Defeats N.C. Wesleyan 19-7

HARTSVILLE, S.C. –The Coker University women's lacrosse team won their first game of the season on Sunday (Mar. 1) with a dominant 19-7 victory over the North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops.

The Cobras were able to jump out to an early 3-0 lead, as Ansley Wallace, Amariah Lawson, and Hannah Shuren each scored goals in the opening three minutes of play. After the Bishops scored their first goal, the Cobras answered back with a goal of their own as Shuren scored her second of the day. Coker continued their great teamwork as the next two scores came off assists, with Alexis Zagan connecting on a pass to Gabby Jessup for a goal, and Wallace finding Meagan Gallagher. Then, Makenzie Stroup scored back-to-back goals to grow the lead to 8-1.

Coker went into halftime with a sizable 14-4 cushion, thanks to four first half goals from Ansley Wallace. The Cobras were able to continue their success offensively in the second half of play. Gallagher scored two of her three goals in the last 30 minutes of action, helping fuel a 19-7 non-conference victory. Wallace led the way with five goals, while Hannah Shuren scored four times. Gabby Jessup and Meagan Gallagher found the back of the net three times, with Amariah Lawson and Makenzie Stroup scoring twice. Olivia Fladung earned her first win of the season as goalkeeper, finishing with five saves.
