Baker, Ferone Hat-trick in Loss at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. – The Coker women's lacrosse team lost a tough 20-7 South Atlantic Conference game to Lenoir-Rhyne University on Saturday (Mar. 22), at Moretz Stadium.

Lenoir –Rhyne got on the board first within the first minute of the game, but the Cobras responded with a goal from Mackenzie Baker to tie the game at 1-1.  The Bears would then go on to score the next five goals to take a 6-1 lead, but Baker struck again with Coker's second goal to make the score 6-2.  In the last 13 minutes of the first half LR would score two more goals, but Hayley Ferone would tally a goal in the final minute to cut the Bears' lead to a manageable five goals, as the Cobras trailed 8-3 at halftime.

Ferone got the second half started for Coker by scoring her second goal of the game to make it an 8-4 game.  The two teams would then exchange a pair of goals for the next 10 minutes, but LR would go on to score eight goals in a row to increase their lead to 18-6.  Coker would tack on another goal in the last six minutes, but the deficit was too much to overcome as time wound down in favor of the home team.

Both Baker and Ferone finished the day with three goals apiece, while Ashlyn Burgett added one.  Baker also had the teams lone assist for the Cobras, along with four draw controls to add on to her 6.80 average per game, which is fourth best in division II.

Coker will continue their road journey as they travel to Lees-McRae this Tuesday (Mar. 25) to compete in another SAC competition.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
