Coker finishes 4th of 18; Gyoni 3rd
ST. SIMON'S ISLAND, GA -- The Coker University Women's Golf Team fired the third-lowest round on Tuesday to finish 4th of 18 schools in the St. Simon's Intercollegiate at the King and Prince Golf Course.
Led by sophomore Daniella Gyoni's 1-over 73, the Cobras jumped from sixth place after Monday's play to 4th with a 19-over par round of 307. Gyoni (Sweden), who had a 75 on Monday, finished third of 93 golfers, just three shots back of winner Amanda Guzman of Erskine (71-74--145). Coker freshman Gisele Morna (Portugal) carded 75-78--153 to finish in a tie for 7th place.
Gyoni, who earned a spot on the five-person All-Tournament team, had one bogey on the front nine and notched two birdies and one on the back side. She hit all 28 fairways over two days and hit 15-of-18 greens with 34 putts on Tuesday. Morna registered one birdie on Tuesday.
Host Lincoln Memorial (+34) claimed the team title by four shots over Newberry, who had Tuesday's best round at 13-over 301. Catawba placed third at +39 after Tuesday's round of 303. Coker came in at +45, nine shots behind the winner, and Shorter took fifth at +47.
"I was really proud of our team today," Coker head coach John Hackney said. "Several of our players got off to a rough start, but they were able to reel it in and start making a bunch of pars, which helped us climb the leaderboard. We were just 5 over as a team on our closing four holes, which was much better than most of our competitors, so that was nice to see.
"Daniella was just brilliant off the tee this week, which made it much easier for her to score. It has been a long time since I have seen someone hit every fairway for two days, especially on a tight golf course. Gisele had another solid showing even though she really never got hot on the greens today when she had 34 putts."
Juniors Kelly Campman (Myrtle Beach, SC), and Haylie George (Chapel Hill, NC) provided the other counting scores for the Cobras at 78 and 79, respectively. Mack Taylor Bailey (Castaic, CA) shot 84.
"I was extremely proud of Kelly and Haylie today," Hackney said. "Their games have really matured in the last year, shown by the fact each of them was 3-over early in their rounds, yet managed to settle in and shoot good scores. Haylie started with a double and a bogey but then parred 11 of the next 12 holes. Kelly showed a lot of grit down the stretch with pars on five of her last six holes, which was awesome!
"We often talk about how pars on the last four holes will help your finish, and today showed that. We were in sixth place with four holes left and could climb two spots by closing strong."
The Cobras are off this week and will conclude their fall schedule at the Converse Invitational Oct. 30-31.
