Women’s Golf Compete at The Battle at Hilton Head

Hilton Head, SC-  The Cobras put themselves in a great position on day 1. Coker battled with numerous teams around them fighting for a top ten position in team standings. Coker went on to finish in eighth place to wrap up the first day.

Mack Taylor Bailey was the golfer who had it going for the Cobras on day 1. Bailey finish the day with five birdies and was one under through the front nine. She went on to finish the round just two over par. Daniella Gyoni had a pretty good day as she finishes the round with one birdie and held on to 13 pars through the course finishing the day with a 79.

Kathleen Escobar completed her day with a solid performance shooting just eight over. Jenna Werle and Haylie George both finished ten over looking to shoot low going into day 2. Kelly Campman shot an 89 for the day and shot a birdie on a par 3 that was tricky for the field.

Coach John Hackney had this to say finishing up Day 1:

"I thought our ladies played well today some tough conditions. The temperature was great but it was very windy and this is a course with a lot of out of bounds and water, so when you make a mistake off the tee box, you pay the price. Still our girls proved resilient today. After some tough holes to start with, we were able to post some very respectable numbers to finish 8th in a field of 18 teams after round 1.

We putted the ball pretty well, averaging about 30 putts per person, and drove the ball well for the most part. Mack had an outstanding day today, striking the ball very well and scoring great despite a quadruple bogey on a par four early in the round. Mack's round included five birdies.

I was proud of Daniella, who had a great day driving the ball, hitting 15 fairways and carding 79 after a rough start. Kathleen didn't have her best ball- striking day, but held in for an 80 and Jenna showed a lot of grit in firing 82 after going 5-over on her first four. Kelly was nervous but hit a lot of great shots and Haylie needed only 29 shots to card 82 as an individual.

We have been working a lot on short game this spring, which was evidenced today by only one 3-putt among our four counting scores. I think we know the course a whole lot better after the first two days so I believe we will play even better tomorrow. We're within striking distance of a handful of teams so it would be nice to climb up the leaderboard before we head home"
