Women's Golf in Third Place, Two Cobras Inside the Top 10 After Day One of the Patsy Rendleman Invitational

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Coker University women's golf team sits in third place with two individuals inside the Top 10 after day one of the Patsy Rendleman Invitational on Monday (Oct. 3) at the Country Club of Salisbury.

The Cobras turned in a round of 314 on the first day, to take third place behind Belmont Abbey (309) and Lenoir-Rhyne (305).

Daniella Gyoni shot a 73 (+2) to finish the day tied for the individual lead, while Kathleen Escobar turned in a 77 (+6) to finish tied for seventh. Mack Taylor Bailey carded an 81 (+10, T-24), while Lora Ledbetter (+12, T-34) turned in an 83 and Jenna Werle finished with an 84 (+13, T-38).

"The conditions were tough out there today with the wind so the scores were high," said head coach John Hackney. "We didn't get off to a very good start, playing the first three holes at nine over, but then the ladies settled in and performed well through the middle part of the round. Daniella had an excellent day with four bogeys and two birdies to tie for the individual lead at 73, but as a team we just didn't roll in enough birdie putts, ending up with just five for our five ladies. I think we hit a lot of good putts that just barely missed the cup today so hopefully they'll fall tomorrow so we can catch those teams ahead of us. This is a very solid regional field so our goal is to clean up a few things tonight, come up with a better game plan and make a run at winning the title here. Kathleen also reeled it in after a tough front nine to shoot just one over on the back nine for a 77, which was crucial for us in the end. We also had a few big holes today that cost us tso we need to eliminate those to be in contention coming down the stretch tomorrow. It should be a fun day!"

The Cobras return to the links tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 4) to wrap up tournament play. Tee-time is set for 10:00 a.m. from the Country Club of Salisbury.
