How It Happened:
The first three minutes were very back-and-forth by both teams, with neither team gaining true separation. A Wasswa lay-up got the scoring going for the Cobras, but was followed by a big run by the Saints to head up 14-6 with under three minutes to go in the first quarter. A McKaylee Allen free throw brough it back to within four with 35 seconds left in the quarter before Limestone scored again to hold a six-point lead heading into the second period of play.
A Thompson jumper got us going in the second, drawing it back to a four-point differential at 20-16. Limestone then started clicking to go on another run, heading up 27-18 with under seven minutes remaining. Free throws by both Mariah Mitchem and Dasia Ferguson brought the score closer, then a Wasswa jumper closed the gap to just three at 27-24 with 5:24 remaining in the quarter. After back-and-forth play for the remainder of the quarter, the Cobras found themselves down six at the half at 37-31.
At the beginning of the third, Limestone stretched the lead to ten points at 41-31 before the Cobras mounted a huge comeback. Tillman sparked the run with a three to make it 41-34, so it was fitting that a Tillman three also capped the run off as they scored a whopping nineteen unanswered points to go up 50-41 in the contest. After a tight end to the third, it was the Cobras up ten at 58-48 headed into the fourth.
Cayanna Stanley gave the Cobras their largest lead of the night at 13 with a three-pointer to make it 63-50. That three prompted a timeout by Limestone, and they came out of that timeout trying to cut into the lead. That short-lived Saints run proved to be too little too late and the Cobras walk away unscathed from Gaffney, winning on the road by a final score of 75-62.
Notables
- Thompson was 6-7 from the floor in her double-double performance
- The Cobras secured 41 rebounds to Limestone's 33, and especially outrebounded them on the offensive end (14 to 5)
