Women's Basketball Falls in Tough Loss at Newberry Wednesday Night

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Coker University women's basketball team fell in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday night (Feb 26) in a tough loss at Newberry by a score of 57-55.

The teams played to a 5-5 tie through the first four minutes, before Coker built an 11-7 lead with under five minutes to play in the quarter. Newberry responded with five straight points to go ahead 12-11, before Coker would go back up 15-12 with under three minutes to play in the quarter. After Coker re-gained a five-point lead, Kelsey McDermott nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to get Newberry back within 17-15 after 10 minutes.

The two teams played to an 18-18 tie through the first minute of the second quarter, before the teams would later lock up at 26 with three and a half minutes to play in the frame. Coker would go up by six with three-pointers from Emily Davis and Shay Jackson, before Newberry would get one point back at the free throw line with 30 seconds left in the period. Coker took a 32-27 lead to the half.

Newberry quickly got back within one in the first two minutes of the third quarter, before Coker would go right back up by six in the first three minutes. The Cobras would keep Newberry at two possessions' distance for the next few minutes, before the Wolves would get back within two in the final minute of the third. Coker took a 46-44 lead to the fourth.

Newberry tied the game two minutes into the quarter, before Coker would hold a three-point lead for the next few minutes. Newberry would tie the game at 49 with under four minutes to play on a clutch three-pointer from Courtney Virgo, before taking a 50-49 lead with just under three minutes to play. Coker would knot the game up at 53 with a layup from Erin Houser, before Virgo would knock down another huge three-pointer with 35 seconds to play. Coker would get back within one on an Emily Davis jumper with 29 seconds to play, before Keli Romas would make one of two free throws to put the Wolves up by two. Coker would get one final look from half court, but it came up empty as the Wolves came away with the conference win.

Houser and Davis each paced the Cobras with 11 points on the night, while Jackson also added 10. Five other Cobras contributed points in the game. Houser completed the double-double with a game-high 17 rebounds, while seven other Cobras were active on the glass in the contest. Davis dished out a team-high three assists in the game, while Houser and Janell Horton each recorded two and Jalah Horton also had one. Janell Horton also registered the lone steal in the contest for Coker. Hope Richardson blocked two shots on the night, while Houser and Janell Horton also had one block each.

The Cobras return home to the DeLoach Center on Saturday (Feb. 29) to host UVA-Wise for Senior Day. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
