Women's Basketball Drops Conference Contest at Catawba Wednesday Night

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Coker University women's basketball team dropped its South Atlantic Conference contest at Catawba Wednesday night (Feb. 12) by a score of 78-61.

Catawba jumped out to a 12-4 lead through the first media timeout, before Coker would eventually get within two with under two minutes to play in the quarter. Catawba would score again before the buzzer to take an 18-14 lead to the second.

Coker would take a 19-18 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter, before the teams would play to a 23-23 tie with five and a half minutes left in the frame. The teams would later play to a tie at 30-30 with a minute and a half left in the period, before Catawba out-scored Coker 5-3 in the remaining time in the quarter to take a 35-33 lead to the half. Coker out-scored Catawba 19-17 in the frame.

Catawba came out hot in the third quarter to stretch their lead into double digits less than three minutes in. The Indians would carry their double-digit lead into the fourth quarter from there.

Coker out-scored Catawba 18-14 in the fourth quarter, but Catawba held its double-digit lead until the final horn.

Saquita Joyner led the Cobras with a game-high 18 points, while Hayley Kropp also scored 12 points in the game. Nine other Cobras contributed points in the game. Coker out-rebounded Catawba 44-36, led by Erin Houser with nine boards. Hope Richardson pulled down seven rebounds in the game, while Janell Horton also collected six rebounds. Nine other Cobras were active on the glass in the contest. Janell Horton also led the Cobras with three assists, while Jalah Horton and Amanda Cherry each dished out two assists and Joyner and Shay Jackson each had one. Houser led the Cobras with three steals in the game, while Kropp had two and Emily Davis and Avahna Baker each registered one. Janell Horton blocked three shots in the game, while Richardson registered two rejections in the game.

The Cobras return home to the DeLoach Center on Saturday (Feb. 15) to host Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference action. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com. A reminder to fans that the Coker University men's lacrosse team is hosting a shoe drive to benefit the InnerSole Foundation and the Hartsville Boys and Girls Club. Donation of a new or slightly worn pair of shoes grants free admission into the game.
