HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University women's basketball team upended Wingate for a South Atlantic Conference win on Wednesday (Jan. 29) by a score of 66-53.

Coker kept Wingate off the scoreboard for the first four and a half minutes of the game, before playing to a 12-4 lead with three and a half minutes left in the first quarter. The Cobras would later extend their lead to double-digits with two Erin Houser free throws, before scoring on two more possessions in the quarter and leading 20-6 after 10 minutes.

The Cobras would extend their lead to 15 in the first two minutes, before Amanda Cherry put the Cobras ahead by 16 with a three-pointer with four and a half minutes to play in the half. The teams would trade buckets in the final few minutes of the half, as Coker went to the break with a 33-19 lead.

The Cobras kept a lead of at least 15 for most of the third quarter as they headed to the final frame leading 51-35.  

The Bulldogs would trim the deficit to 14 in the fourth quarter, but the Cobras would continue to roll in the final 10 minutes extending their lead to as many as 20 in the frame.

Houser paced the Cobras with a game-high 18 points, while Janell Horton added 13 points and Emily Davis chipped in a career-high 10 points off the bench. Five other Cobras contributed in the scoring column in the victory. The Cobras would out-rebound Wingate 33-30 in the game. Saquita Joyner paced the Cobras on the glass with eight boards, while Houser also pulled down seven rebounds in the game. Six other Cobras were active on the glass in the win. Janell Horton paced the Cobras with a career-high five assists in the game, while seven others helped on Coker buckets. Three Cobras each had two steals apiece, while another three posted one steal each in the game. Janell Horton also had the lone block for the Cobras in the game.

The Cobras hit the road on Saturday (Feb. 1) to wrap up the season series with Mars Hill. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
