Women's Basketball Battles, but Falls to Catawba Wednesday Night in Conference Action

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University women's basketball team battled, but fell against Catawba Wednesday night (Jan. 8) in South Atlantic Conference action by a score of 76-66.

The Indians jumped out to a 12-6 lead over the first three minutes, before eventually extending their lead to eight just past the halfway point of the period. Catawba would up its lead to double-digits, before the Cobras would end the quarter on a run to cut the deficit to 23-21 headed to the second.

The two teams played to a 28-28 tie through three minutes and change in the second quarter, before the Indians would jump ahead to a six-point lead in the last four minutes of the half. The Cobras would get back within five in the final minute, before Jalah Horton knocked down a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer to get the Cobras back within 39-36 at the half.

The Cobras got back within one early in the third quarter, before the Indians would extend their lead back up to nine with four minutes to play in the frame. The Indians would get their lead back into double-digits in the final few minutes of the quarter to take a 12-point lead to the fourth.

Coker would win the final frame 20-18, before Catawba would ultimately take the road victory. The Cobras would get back within seven in the first three minutes of the quarter, before the Indians would keep the Cobras at a few possessions' distance for the remainder of the contest.

Jalah Horton led the Cobras with 11 points on the night, while nine other Cobras contributed points on the night. Erin Houser and Saquita Joyner each pulled down a team-high six boards in the game, while seven other Cobras were active on the glass. Janell Horton tied a season and career-high with four assists to lead the Cobras, while Jalah Horton also dished out three assists. Five other Cobras helped on buckets in the game. Four different Cobras also recorded steals in the contest. Hope Richardson and Janell Horton each had two blocks in the game, while Houser also had one block.

The Cobras are back at home on Saturday (Jan. 11) to host Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference action. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
