Women's Basketball Falls in Division I Exhibition at College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Coker University women's basketball team dropped its Division I exhibition at the College of Charleston on Tuesday night (Nov. 12) by a score of 82-57. 

The two teams played to a 6-6 tie two minutes in, before College of Charleston would extend its lead to 16-7 around the halfway point of the frame. The Cougars out-scored Coker 7-2 in the remainder of the period to take a 23-9 lead to the second quarter. 

Jordan Ellis and Amanda Cherry knocked down three-pointers to start the second quarter for Coker, before the Cougars went on a run to extend their lead to as many as 24 in the quarter. College of Charleston led 46-22 at the half. 

Coker hung with the Cougars in the third quarter, only being out-scored 22-20 in the frame. The teams traded three-pointers to start the quarter, before the Cobras would go on to total their highest-scoring quarter of the game. The Cobras shot 37.5 percent (15-40) from the floor and 50.0 percent (2-4) from long range in the quarter. 

Coker would win the fourth quarter 15-14, as the Cobras scored the final four points of the contest. 

Cherry led the Cobras with 17 points on the night, while Erin Houser had eight and Saquita Joyner had seven. Hope Richardson and Janell Horton each scored six points, while Jordan Ellis added five points and Jalah Horton scored four points. Ashauntee Nelson also had two points. Coker pulled down 35 rebounds in the contest, led by seven from Richardson. Joyner and Christie Zawacki each pulled down six, while Houser also grabbed five. Shay Jackson and Jalah Horton each grabbed two rebounds in the game, while Cherry and Janell Horton also contributed one rebound each. Nelson posted a team-high three assists on the night, while Jackson had two and Houser and Jalah Horton each had one. Houser also had two blocks in the game, while Jalah Horton also had one. Joyner had a team-high three steals in the game, while five others also recorded steals in the game. 

The Cobras are back on the floor for their home opener on Saturday (Nov. 16) when they host Erskine College at 2:00 p.m. at the DeLoach Center.
