Cobra Women Take Down Eagles 68-61

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker Cobras picked up a big 68-61 win over the Carson-Newman Eagles on Saturday (Jan. 17) in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action.

Tanesha Stenson and Sydney Shull led the Cobras to the victory. Stenson had a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Shull scored a season high 20 points with six rebounds. Kendra Lambert and Kiara Shoats also chipped in eight points apiece.

The Cobras came out of the gates firing off a 14-2 run in the opening stanza. The Eagles bounced back with an 18-10 run to trim the lead to just four, 24-20, with just less than three minutes remaining in the half. After a couple more Coker baskets, Carson-Newman poured in the final five points of the half to tie the game at 28 heading into halftime.

Coker once again came out of the locker room ready to play as they opened the second half with a 17-5 run, taking a 45-33 lead with 14 minutes remaining. Carson-Newman was not about to go away quietly. The Eagles battled back to tie the game at 58 with 2:26 left. Back-to-back three-pointers by Stenson and Shull made it a two possession game, 64-60, with a minute to go.  Clutch free throw shooting by Shoats and Shull put the game away and gave the Cobras the 68-61 victory.

The Cobras have now won five of their last seven in the friendly confines of the DeLoach Center.

Coker will return to action in another SAC matchup on Wednesday (Jan. 21) at Newberry College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Newberry's Eleazer Arena.
