Second Half Run Fuels Cobras Past Wolves

A second half offensive run pulled the Cobras out of a tightly contested contest, and pushed them past Newberry in a SAC match up.

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker women's basketball team captured an 83-72 win over SAC foe Newberry on Wednesday (Jan. 22) night in the Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium.  The win improves the Cobras to 9-6 on the year, and more importantly 7-4 in conference play.  

The first half featured eight lead changes and five ties on the scoreboard.  Eventually the two teams would battle to a 35-35 contest at the break.

In the second half, the Cobras began to separate at the 17-minute mark after two trifectas from Kelley Godbout, and a made jump shot from Jessica Cohen.  The navy and yellow would then proceed to go on a 24-10 run to lead by 14 at the 6-minute mark.    

The Wolves clawed their way back to a single digit defict, but clutch free throw shooting in the waning minutes of the game would preserve the double-digit triumph for Coker. 

Godbout lead the team with a double-double that included 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Of her 18 points, seven of them came in the last minute of the game when the forward went 7-of-8 from the free throw line.  Cohen was next on the scoring list for the Cobras with 16 points, and just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.  Tanesha Stenson added 13 more points; while Heidrun Kristmundsdottir had a game high five assists. 

As a team the Cobras went 19-of-25 from the charity stripe, and shot 40-percent from the floor.  Defensively, the home team forced 11 turnovers while collecting five steals and two blocks. 

Coker will continue their home stand on Saturday (Jan. 25) as they host Tusculum in a SAC competition.  The Cobras will take the floor at 2:00 p.m., followed by the men's team at 4:00.
