Cobras Take Down Saints in Final Seconds

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jessica Cohen (Ladsen, S.C.) knocked down a pair of free throws with just one second remaining, giving the Coker women a 60-58 lead and the eventual win over Limestone College on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Cobras to 5-4 in Conference Carolinas play, while Limestone suffers their first loss in conference play dropping to 10-1.

Playing in the home of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, Time Warner Cable Arena, the Cobras had a tough time finding their rhythm as the Saints jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the opening four minutes. Coker finally got the jitters worked out and thanks to a 10-1 run, they cut the Limestone lead to just two (22-20) with just under four left in the half. The Saints added 12 more points in the final minutes of the first half taking a 34-25 lead into the intermission.

The Cobras continued to trail the Saints throughout the second half until a three-pointer by Charlotte local Kelley Godbout (Matthews, N.C.) tied the game at 56 with 48 seconds remaining. Then with the score tied at 58 the Saints sent Cohen to the line with just a second left where she put home the game winner from the charity stripe.

Jasmine Alston (Sumter, S.C.) led the Cobras with 13 points and five rebounds, while Godbout and Amber Lau (Mt. Wolfe, Pa.) had 11 points and eight rebounds each. Cohen finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

For the Saints, Tia Williams was the game's leading scorer with 14 points, while Stephanie Hayes scored 13 points off the bench with six rebounds and Lauren Pace had 10 points.

The Cobras will be back at home for their next game on Wednesday, Feb 1 against Mount Olive College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
