Coastal Georgia Comes from Behind to Defeat Coker, 70-64

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Jessica Cohen (Ladsen, S.C.) posted a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds in the Coker women's basketball team's 70-64 loss to the College of Coastal Georgia.

The Cobras came out strong, putting up 35 points in the opening half, taking a five-point lead into the break. Then in the second half, Coastal Georgia turned on the pressure tying the game at 39 with 17 minutes left. The Cobras quickly answered and built as much as a 10 point lead, 59-49, with seven minutes remaining.

The Mariners were not to be out done and thanks to an 11-2 run over the next four minutes they evened things at 61 all. Coker stayed within a basket of the Mariners and even trailed by just one, 65-64 with a minute left in the game. However, a layup by Olivia Melvin with 34 seconds left and the ensuing free throw put Coastal Georgia on top for good.

In addition to Cohen's double-double, Amber Lau (Mt. Wolfe, Pa.) added 13 points and Jasmine Evans (Birmingham, Ala.) had eight points.

Coastal Georgia's Courtney Saunds led all scorers with 24 points and Maria Marshall had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Cobras will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 3 when they begin Conference Carolinas play on the road at Mount Olive College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
