HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Senior Megan Thomas (Cresskill, N.J) gave the Coker women’s basketball team their second win in as many games with a clutch running jump shot that fell as time expired giving the Cobras 61-59 win over Limestone College in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball Thursday night.

Thomas’ running jumper capped off a 16 point night for the senior that included five assists and three rebounds.

A buzzer beating shot just scratches the surface of what was a very tightly contested game by both Limestone and Coker from the start. In the first half alone there were five ties and six lead changes and as the teams left the court at halftime the score was tied at 30.

The second half was just as close with eight lead changes and three ties. The Cobras clung to a one point lead for nearly the last five minutes of play. Thomas gave the Cobras a two point lead with just 2:51 left in the game, but 20 seconds later, a lay-up by Limestone’s Stephanie Hayes tied the game at 59.

Several turnovers, and missed opportunities later, the Cobras would regain possession with just 11 seconds remaining. A Timeout by Coach Jenny Finora, set the final play in motion. Thomas would carry the ball the length of the court and with just one second remaining she hit her heroic shot to give the Cobras the win, 61-59.

Jasmine Alston (Sumter, S.C.) may not have hit the game winning shot, but she did lead Coker offensively with a game high 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Maija Castren (Vantaa, Finland) picked up her second double figure point performance in as many games with 14 points and six rebounds.

Limestone was led by Maria Young’s 18 points and nine rebounds, while Kaileigh West had 10 points and five rebounds.

The Coker women head back to the court on Saturday, as they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Converse College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
