HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Senior Megan Thomas (Cresskill, N.J.) had a double-double scoring a career high 27 points with 11 assists to pace the Cobra women’s basketball team offense in their heartbreaking 84-83 overtime loss to Belmont Abbey Thursday night.
Five Cobras registered double figures in the loss. Along with Thomas’ 27 points, Jasmine Alston (Sumter, S.C.) had 16 points and six rebounds, while Lucy Fish (Nottingham, England) had 12 points, all from beyond the arc and Nikki Grigsby (Las Vegas, Nev.) Shanice Cooper (Sumter, S.C.) each had 10 points.
Belmont Abbey freshman guard Kelsey Long notched a double-double as she led all scorers with 29 points and 10 rebounds. She also led five Crusaders in double figures with Shayla Jackson and Melisa Foures both finished with 15 points, while Candace Fox added 14 points. Brittaney Rice chipped in with 10 points in the game.
Coker shot 47.6 percent (30-63) for the game and led by as many as 10 points in the first half before the Abbey closed out the half on an 18-10 run in the final 6:44 to cut the deficit to just one as the two teams headed for the locker room at 33-32.
Coker built its lead to 46-37, but a 14-6 Crusaders run gave the Abbey a one-point lead, its first advantage since the ten minute mark of the first half.
After a Thomas basket dipped the Crusader lead back to two, the Abbey extended its lead to nine on a 7-0 run. Coker cut the lead to five, but the Crusaders quickly answered with a three-pointer and a jumper to extend the lead to its highest of the game, 10 points, 73-63, with 4:11 to go, but the Abbey would only score one more point in the final 4:11 as Coker erased the ten point lead with an 11-1 run in the final 1:58, capped off with a layup from Shanice Cooper in the final seconds to send the game into overtime with the score tied at 74.
In the extra period, Coker took an early four point advantage points at 80-76.
Abbey was not done yet, as Foures converted a three-point play, sinking a layup while being fouled, and her ensuing free throw knotted the game at 82.
Fox gave the Crusaders the lead for good when she hit the second of a two-shot free throw to put the Abbey ahead 83-82 with 46 ticks left.
Foures hit a free throw to take the lead to 84-82 and Coker’s Sylina Dennis (Aiken, S.C.) netted a shot of her own from the charity stripe to make it an 84-83 final.
Coker will take to the court again on Saturday, when the Cobras host the Queens University of Charlotte Royals at 5:30 p.m. in the Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium.
