WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women’s basketball team completed its regular season Saturday night with an 85-71 home win over Coker College, the 18th straight win for the Lady Bulldogs.
Reigning Conference Carolinas player of the year Esty Flores led three Barton players in scoring with 17 points. Faith Hunter added 16 points, and Janae Jackson chipped in 12 for the Lady Bulldogs, now 21-5 overall and 20-1 in the conference.
Coker, which finished its season at 3-21 overall and 2-19 in league play, was paced by a game-high 21 points from Kiesha Beavers. Henna Koponen added 19 points, and Jasmine Alston contributed 18 points in a losing cause.
Barton, which had already clinched the regular-season title and No. 1 seed for next week’s league tournament, led throughout Saturday’s contest, scoring the game’s first 13 points, seven of those by Flores.
The Lady Bulldogs still led by 12, 29-17, with 7:50 left in the first half, when Coker began a run that would pull the squad within three points on an Alston layup with 3:25 to go in the period. However, Janetta Robinson made consecutive baskets for Barton, the start of a 10-2 spurt by the Lady Bulldogs that extended the lead back to double-digits with just over a minute to play in the half.
Coker pulled within eight points on three different occasions in the second half, but could get no closer. Barton led by as many as 21 points with 4:32 to go in the game.
Barton will host No. 8 seed Erskine College in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Conference Tournament on Monday at 7 p.m.
