BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Junior forward Ashley Williamson came off the bench to post 22 points and 18 rebounds, both career highs, powering Campbell women’s Hoops past Coker in the opening basketball game of the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.

The Lady Camels move to 1-0 on the season, while Coker falls to 0-1 in both teams’ first game of the 2008-09 season.

The Lady Camels took control of the contest out of the gate, notching a 14-2 lead at the 12 minute mark after freshman guard Amanda O’Neill picked off a Cobra pass and took it down for an easy lay-in. Leading by as much as 14 in the opening stanza, Campbell held Coker to a dismal 19.2 shooting percentage to start the game.

Williamson, a Colonial Heights, Va. native, owned a double-double at the half, taking down 15 boards while recording 12 points. Williamson also posted a block on the night, along with a pair of assists. Meanwhile, newcomer Geami Britt, a junior forward from Campbellton, Fla., registered nine first half points to help the Lady Camels hold a 33-18 lead at the break.

The Lady Camels offensive numbers ballooned in the second half, as the unit posted a stellar 58.1 percent from the floor on 18-of-31 shooting, again driven by Williamson. The junior forward tallied 10 points and three rebounds in the second half.

Britt, a junior, joined Williamson in double figures with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, adding a pair of rebounds and three assists in her Lady Camel debut. Sophomore forward Lauren Yesh was a third CU player in double digits with 12 points in the win. Yesh added five rebounds in her 17 minutes of play.

Senior guard Jessica Mack, who recorded nearly 70 steals last season, began her 2008-09 campaign with three, while totaling eight points and seven boards with two assists. O’Neill finished her first game in the Orange and Black with six points, while Whitney Ferguson, Katelyn Bass, and Kate Cloxton, all freshmen, combined for 15 off the bench.

Cara Bell, a senior from Weldon, N.C., ended the night with two points and two assists in a career high nine minutes of play, while fellow senior Lauren Arthur recorded six assists.

Leading the Cobras was junior guard Lotta Aaltonen, who connected on 6-of-17 from the floor to help the Rauma, Finland native to 18 points in 37 minutes. Junior forward Henna Koponen joined Aaltonen in double figures with 14 points on the night. Koponen also led the Cobras on the glass, posting seven rebounds.

Next up for the Lady Camels will be Coastal Carolina, as CU will head to Conway, S.C. on Monday, Nov. 17 for a 7 p.m. tilt.
