CHARLOTTE, N.C. (February 23, 2008) – Markeisha Hicks (Rock Hill, S.C./Rock Hill)  led the Queens University of Charlotte women’s basketball team over Coker College, 80-66, with 21 points on Saturday night at the Ovens Athletics Center. The Royals improve to 8-17 overall and 8-10 in Conference Carolinas action while the Cobras fall to 6-20 overall and 5-14 in Conference Carolinas play.

Queens led all but for just s short time when the Cobras tied the game early on, 2-2. M. Hicks broke the tie with basket and the Royals never looked back.

The Royals slowly extended the lead to as many as 15 during the half and were up by 13, 42-29, at the buzzer. The first half success came from the bench, 19 points, second-chance points, 13, and strong rebounding, 28 boards. Coker recorded eight bench points, four second-chance points and 12 rebounds.

Queens held the same pace in the second half. The gap became as large 21 in the second stanza, but Coker cut it back down to 14 before the final buzzer. 

Again, the Royals toughness around the glass helped them to outrebound Coker, 29-20, and score 17 second-chance points.

The third leading scorer in conference play, Temeca Spain, was limited to just 9 points by the Royals defense. Rebecca Kolbeck led Coker with 18 points.

Queens will travel to Due West, S.C. to face Erskine on February 26 at 5:30pm.
