Hartsville, SC- With just four minutes remaining in the game, the Coker Lady Cobras basketball team looked like they might be able to pull off their first win of the season, as they trailed Newberry College by just four points, 62-58. Unfortunately for Coker, the Indians were not about to let that happen as they mounted a 22-12 run to hand the Cobras their fifth straight loss with a score of 84-70. The loss drops Coker to 0-5 on the season, while Newberry improves to 3-1 overall.

The Cobras hung with the formerly nationally ranked Indians for most of the game, with five lead changes and eight ties over the course of the night. Both teams shot 66.7 percent from the charity stripe, while Newberry out shot the Cobras from the field going 31-for-60 (51.7%) compared to Coker’s  26-for-61 (42.6%).

Leading Coker was Henna Koponen (Vantaa, Finland) scoring 11-of-17 for 23 points with three rebounds, while Temeca Spain (Conway, SC) was 5-for-8 with 13 points and five rebounds. Lotta Aaltonen (Rauma, Finland) added 11 points and five rebounds for the Cobras.

Newberry’s Tonique Frasier was the Indian’s leading scoring with a game high 26 points and eight rebounds, while Laura Marquardt netted 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for Newberry was Tacarra Harris with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Cobras return to action on Thursday, at 6:00 p.m. as they host Conference Carolinas rival Barton College.
