Hartsville, SC- Henna Koponen scored a season high 25 points as the Lady Cobras got some revenge and then some against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on Saturday afternoon. Coker defeated the Crusaders 80-62, a much needed improvement over the 71-28 beating that the Cobras took from Belmont on January 13. With the win the Lady Cobras improved to 5-16 on the season, with a 3-11 CVAC record, while the Abbey dropped to 8-11 overall, and 5-8 in the CVAC.

 

The first half was a close battle ending with a 37-30 Coker advantage, but it was the second half and its 35 fouls, 22 of which came from the Crusaders that were the difference. Coker’s 71.4 percent and 25 points from the charity stripe was the difference maker in the game.

 

Ko0ponen added six rebounds and fours assists to her career night, while fellow Finland native Lotta Aaltonen added 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists of her own. Also netting double figures were India Elliot and Rebecca Kolbeck, with 11 and 10 points respectively. Kolbeck pulled down six boards and had four assists in the game as well, with Elliot grabbing four rebounds of her own.

 

For the Crusaders, Marie Marquez led the way with 16 points and six rebounds, while Amy Mulnix had 11 points and six rebounds. Courtney Naquin was the third Crusader with double figures, scoring 10 points.

 

Coker returns to the floor on Thursday, February 8, as they host Erskine College at 5:30 p.m.
