LAURINBURG, N.C.—Senior guard Karen Foggie’s (Charlotte, N.C.) game-high 17 points including her 1000th career point in the first half led St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a 64-51 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women’s basketball victory over Coker College on Wednesday night in Harris Court.

 

The Lady Knights, who are ranked nationally in NCAA Division II in three different defensive stat categories released on Tuesday, improved to 10-2 overall. With the win, SAPC holds a half game lead in the CVAC standings with a 7-1 conference record. The Cobras fell to 3-12 overall and 1-7 in the CVAC.

 

The Knights, who improved to 6-0 at home this season, are ranked No. 8 nationally in defensive field goal percentage (33.9%), No. 19 nationally in rebounding margin (+8.3 rebounds/game), and No. 31 nationally in defensive scoring (allowing 55.6 pts/game).

 

After scoring St. Andrews’ first four points, Foggie hit a baseline jumper on a senior Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) inbounds pass with 9:27 left in the first half to record her 1,000th career point at SAPC and give the Lady Knights a 21-12 lead. Foggie extended the St. Andrews margin to 35-22 at halftime by draining the last shot of the first. Foggie led all players with 10 points and six rebounds at the intermission.

 

Coker pulled to within seven points three different times in the second half but St. Andrews never let the Lady Cobras get any closer. Both teams scored 29 points in the final stanza as the Lady Knights pulled out the 13-point victory. All 12 active SAPC players saw at least 11 minutes of playing time.

 

St. Andrews shot 37.7% (26-for-69) compared to Coker’s 36.0% (18-for-50); held a slim 40-39 advantage on the glass; and controlled the ball better only committing 12 turnovers to the Cobras 22.

 

Foggie finished with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting along with seven rebounds and three assists. Junior Jessy Perkins (Goldsboro, N.C.) tied her career-high’s of 13 points and 10 rebounds on Wednesday, posting her first double-double of the season. Freshman Hannah Sheffield (Lexington, N.C.) bucketed a career-high six points while junior April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) swatted away a team-high three blocks.

 

Freshman Henna Koponen (Vantaa, Finland) led the Lady Cobras with 12 points and six rebounds. Senior India Elliot (Faison, N.C.) and freshman Lotta Aaltonen (Rauma, Finland) added 10 and nine points, respectively. Aaltonen also logged four rebounds and a game-high four blocks. Freshman Kiesha Beavers (Williamstown, N.J.) had a team-high seven boards.

 

St. Andrews will go for five straight CVAC wins when they visit league rival Pfeiffer University (Misenheimer, N.C.) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Coker entertains CVAC opponent Lees-McRae College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
