NEWBERRY, S.C. – In a game that yielded only 99 total points on 118 field goal attempts, Newberry College improved to 5-0 on the early season with a 65-34 victory over Coker College Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena.

The Lady Cobras (1-2) shot a dismal 21.6 percent from the floor, including just four field goals made in the second half.

Unlike the majority of games this season, Newberry actually trailed in the early going. After jumping out to a 5-0 lead on a lay-up from Lady Indian junior Tonique Frasier, Coker went on a 13-7 run capped off by Temeca Spain’s jumper at 11:38.

Over the next 11 minutes, the scarlet and gray proceeded to out score the Lady Cobras by a 21-point margin to gain a 38-18 lead by halftime.

Frasier and junior point guard Monica Alexander each totaled nine first half points and sophomore Carnicha Bellinger added eight points and nine rebounds.

The second half was more of the same for the Lady Cobras. Coker was only able to cash in on 14.8 percent of attempted shots and were out-rebounded 27-20.

For Newberry, four starters turned in double-digit efforts in points. Bellinger recorded a double-double with a team-high 14 rebounds to compliment her 10 points.

Frasier finished with 13 points and seven boards while junior Ashlee Wright showcased an all-around game with 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists in 17 minutes of play.

Alexander matched Frasier’s team-high 13 points on 6-10 shooting from the floor. The Norcross, Ga. native also scratched out four steals and three rebounds.

No Coker College player picked up more than seven points. Australian Madison Bycroft and Finn Lotta Aaltonen each posted seven. Aaltonen hit just two of her 12 shots, but did lead the Lady Cobra’s in rebounds with nine.

The Newberry College Lady Indian basketball team is next in action on Tuesday, November 28, at Eleazer Arena against Claflin University. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
