HARTSVILLE, SC—With the Knights leading by one heading into the final minute, the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team held host and CVAC rival Coker College without a shot in the final 60 seconds and caused two turnovers to hold on for the 66-65 victory on Monday in Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium.

The Knights snapped a two-game skid and evened their conference record back to .500, improving to 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the CVAC. The Lady Cobras fell to 2-10 and 1-5.

Senior Tamerial Coward (La Grange, NC) capped an 11-0 St. Andrews run to start the game with a field goal at 15:48. Coward converted on another shot to give the Knights their largest lead of the half, 17-4, at 13:37.

However, a jumper by sophomore Temeca Spain (Conway, SC) finished a 16-2 Coker run over the next five-plus minutes to retake the lead at 20-19. Junior Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) ended the run and put the Knights back on top for the rest of the half with a made two-pointer. Mitchell started an 18-10 run to finish the first frame, giving St. Andrews a 37-30 halftime advantage.

Once again the Knights pulled out to a double-digit lead to start the second half only to see the Lady Cobras come all the way back and tie the game at 47 apiece with just under 12 minutes to go.

The contest remained close and with everything deadlocked at 57 junior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, NC) drilled a three-pointer to put SAPC on top for good. Coker stayed within range and with the Knights leading 66-64 with 1:04 left on the clock, Foggie committed a foul that sent Spain to the free throw line with the chance to tie the game. After draining the first attempt, Spain missed the possible tying shot. St. Andrews took advantage and stepped up on defense with three consecutive holds to finish off the victory.

The Knights shot 41.9-percent from the field while Coker went 35.1%. The Lady Cobras held a 45-37 advantage on the boards but committed more turnovers, 19-17.

Mitchell led four St. Andrews scorers in double-figures, bucketing 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Mitchell added four rebounds and four assists in the win. Senior Crista Henderson (Prince George, VA) scored 11 points while Coward and Foggie each added 10.

Sophomore Ashley Brooks (Hillsborough, NC) led the Lady Cobras with a game-high 17 points. Spain pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while freshman Deborah Wilson finished with 10 points.

The Cobras visit Queen's University on Thursday, January 19, in a CVAC match-up at 5:30 p.m.
