Hartsville, SC- Former Coker Head Women’s Basketball Coach Katie Pate, returned to Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium for the first time since March 2005 when she took over as Head Coach at Belmont Abbey College and her new team proved to be more than the Lady Cobras could handle. Belmont Abbey defeated Coker 72-57 on Monday night in CVAC basketball.

The Cobras now drop to 2-7 overall, and 1-4 in the CVAC, while Belmont Abbey improves to 6-4 overall, and 3-1 in the CVAC.

Pate’s Crusaders came out strong and built an 11 point lead going into the half. Coker kept it closer in the second half as they were only outscored by six, but the Crusader’s early lead was too much for the Cobras to over come.

Coker Senior Ashley White/Urbana, MD, lead the Cobras attack, scoring a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow senior Rachael Kolbeck/Santa Paula, CA, had 15 points and five rebounds. Junior India Elliot/Faison, NC, also scored in double figures, as she netted 12 points for the Cobras.

As for the Crusaders, Nicole Woods was the scoring leader, with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Valorie Bennett added 17 points and six rebounds for Belmont. Whitney Robinson also contributed 14 points toward the win for the Crusaders.

Coker returns to action on Wednesday, January 11, as they host the visiting All-Stars of Converse College at 5:30 p.m. Coker defeated Converse 88-66 in their first meeting earlier this season.
