Coker Softball Drops Doubleheader to Nationally Ranked Valdosta State

Valdosta, Georgia – The Coker University softball team dropped Tuesday's (Mar. 3) doubleheader on the road against 21st nationally ranked Valdosta State Blazers, by scores of 7-0 and 9-3.

Game One

The Blazers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, and never looked back thanks to a great start by Shayne O'Connell who pitched a complete game no hitter, striking out 11 batters to lead Valdosta State to victory. Christine Carver battled against a talented Blazer lineup, striking out six through four innings of work.

Game Two

Valdosta State continued their success into game two, holding a 6-0 lead after three innings. However, this time the Cobras were able to rally back into the game. Kayla Oswell reached base on a throwing error, as the first run of the day came across home plate for Coker. The next at bat, Anna Gluhosky singled to right field, scoring Ava Jay.  Ashley Meckley kept things going for the Cobras, hitting a solo home-run in the top of the fifth to trim the deficit to 6-3. Despite the Coker rally, Valdosta State held on for the 9-3 victory.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Mar. 7) when they travel to Newberry, S.C. to take on the Newberry College Wolves. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., with live coverage available at www.cokercobras.com.
