Coker Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against King

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker University softball team swept Sunday's (Mar.1) doubleheader against King University by scores of 3-0 and 3-2.

Game One

The story of game one was the fantastic pitching by both teams. Christine Carver and Nikole Counts were fantastic in the circle all afternoon. In the bottom of the third inning, Jena Dewalt reached first on an error, and then stole second base. Jessia McWhorter brought her home on an RBI ground out. After three innings, the Cobras led 1-0 despite not having any hits. That changed in the bottom of the sixth, as Brooklynn Stueness singled after Ashley Meckley drew a walk. Lauren DeWitt singled to right center field to score them both as the Cobras took a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, Christine Carver continued her dominance as she held the Tornadoes scoreless to fuel a 3-0 Coker victory. Carver pitched a complete game, only allowing two hits and striking out seven.

Game Two

In the bottom of the first inning, Ashley Meckley homered to left center field to give the Cobras an early 1-0 lead. After the Tornadoes rallied back in the top of the third, the Cobras tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Ava Jay singled up the middle to score Hannah Goodman.

Jordyn Goodman relieved Isabelle Mullen in the third inning, keeping the game tied with five scoreless innings of work. With the game still tied in the bottom of the seventh, Hannah Goodman kept the inning alive with a single up the middle, bringing up Bailey Douglas. Douglas walked it off for the Cobras by hitting a double to right center field to win the game 3-2.
