Coker Softball Completes Cougar Classic Sweep; Defeats Union 4-3

Columbus, Georgia – The Coker University softball team defeated the Union University Bulldogs 4-3 in extra innings on Sunday (Feb. 16), winning all three games at the Cougar Classic over the weekend.

The Cobras jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Alex Alverson was able to score off a throwing error. The Bulldogs rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the third inning, and thanks to great pitching they maintained that lead until the top of the seventh. Lauren DeWitt came up with a clutch RBI single to score Brooklynn Stueness, tying the game at 2-2 to force extra innings. Kayla Oswell was able to give the Cobras the lead in the top of the eighth, scoring Madison King. The followig at bat, Hannah Goodman drove in another run on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt to grow the lead to 4-2.

It was a team effort for the Cobras when it came to pitching, as Christine Carver, Isabelle Mullen, and Jordyn Goodman all were able to keep the game close throughout the night. Carver struck out eight over the course of four innings, while Mullen only allowed one hit in 3.1 innings pitched. After the Cobras took the lead in the top of the eighth, Goodman came in to get the final outs, picking up the save and leading Coker to their sixth straight win.

The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 19) when they travel to Aiken, S.C. to take on USC Aiken in a doubleheader. Game times are set for 2:00 and 4:00, with live coverage available at www.cokercobras.com.
