Coker Softball Defeats Albany State University 13-1

Columbus, Georgia – The Coker University softball team won their fifth game in a row on Saturday (Feb. 15) with a 13-1 victory over the Albany State University Golden Rams at the Cougar Classic.

The Cobras were able to jump out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring seven runs on three hits. Lauren DeWitt got things started by drawing a walk with the bases loaded. After Madison King reached on an error to score another run, Bailey Douglas singled to center field to grow the lead to 4-0. Lilli Otten followed that up with an RBI double to left field. Olivia Varella and Alex Alverson each drove in a run as well to fuel a seven run first inning for Coker.

In the bottom of the third inning, Ashley Meckley tripled to right center field to score the eighth run of the afternoon. Jessica McWhorter and DeWitt each got RBI knocks to give the Cobras a 10-0 advantage. The following inning, the lead grew to 13-0, courtsey of RBI hits from Brooklynn Stueness and Morgan Richardson. Hannah Fisher and Jordyn Goodman were dominant in the circle for the Cobras, only allowing one run through five innings to propel Coker to a 13-1 victory.

The Cobras will be back in action on Sunday (Feb. 16) when they take on Union University and Columbus State. Fist pitch against Union is scheduled for 11:15 a.m., with live coverage available at www.cokercobras.com.
