Coker Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Erskine To Begin 2020 Season

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Coker University softball team swept the doubleheader on Wednesday (Feb. 5) against the Erskine College Flying Fleet to open the 2020 season. The Cobras won game one by a score of 8-0, and clinched the series by winning game two 12-1 in five innings.

Game One

In the bottom of the first inning, Christine Carver worked out of a jam, leaving two Flying Fleet runners on base. The Cobras used that momentum to score two runs in the top half of the second inning courtesy of an infield RBI single by Anna Gluhosky and a hit by pitch drawn by Ashley Meckley that gave the Cobras an early 2-0 lead.

After Lauren DeWitt and Lilli Otten were able to reach base to lead off the top of the third, Jessica McWhorter drove them home with a two-run triple to grow the Cobra advantage to 4-0. McWhorter later scored on a wild pitch, and then a Madison King solo homer gave Coker their sixth run of the game, and fourth of the inning. In the top of the sixth, Ashley Meckley hit the second homerun of the game for the Cobras as they cruised to an 8-0 victory.

Christine Carver was dominant on the mound, only allowing one hit through five scoreless innings of work.

Game Two

In game two of the doubleheader, the Cobras picked up right where they left off, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning fueled by RBI knocks from Jena Dewalt and Kayla Oswell.

Coker continued to pile on in the top of the third, scoring five runs on four hits. After Oswell led the inning off with a single, DeWitt launched her first homer of the season to give the Cobras a 5-1 advantage. Later in the inning, Alex Alverson singled to right field to bring Gluhosky home. Meckley kept things going with a two-run double as the Cobra lead grew to 8-1. In the top of the fifth, Oswell put the icing on the cake for the Cobras with a three-run homer, as they went on to win 12-1 after five innings.

Preseason All-Conference first team selection Isabelle Mullen turned in a quality start for the Cobras, pitching four innings and striking out six. Hannah Fisher came in and closed out the final inning, striking out two Erskine batters to seal the win.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 8) when they take on Georgia College at the Bobcat Classic in Milledgeville, Georgia. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m., with live coverage available at www.cokercobras.com.
