Softball Sweeps Claflin to Remain Perfect at Home
The Coker College softball team pushed their record to 12-2 to start the season on Thursday (Feb. 21) after beating Claflin University 4-1 and 6-5 in a non-conference doubleheader.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker College softball team pushed their record to 12-2 to start the season on Thursday (Feb. 21) after beating Claflin University 4-1 and 6-5 in a non-conference doubleheader.
The Cobras wasted no time in game one as Maria Williamson drove in Chloe Pelham in the first inning to get the Navy and Gold on the board first. Moments later Anna Gluhosky laced a triple into left field to score Williamson and give Coker a two-run cushion. Claflin would pull one back in the second, but the Cobras pitching shut them down for the remainder of the game. The Cobras would tack on another run in the sixth thanks to a bases-loaded walk by Pelham that scored Lauren DeWitt.
Christine Carver picked up the win after going five innings, allowing just one run and striking out six batters. Jordyn Goodman, coming off of a perfect game in her last appearance, was strong in her one inning of work. Goodman faced three batters in relief of Carver and struck out the side. Taylor Forehand was credited with the save after pitching a perfect seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Claflin would be the team jumping out to an early lead in game two after plating a pair in the top of the first, but the Cobras would not let it last long. Pelham drove in the first run and Williamson would plate Pelham moments later to tie it back up. After an infield single by DeWitt and a walk from Makayla Shore the Cobras would add two more thanks to back-to-back singles by Brianna Strickland and Madison King. Allyson High added another RBI single and Cierra Watts drove in another with a sacrifice fly to put the Cobras back in front 5-2. Claflin would level it at five in the third and it was not until the fifth inning, when Strickland singled center to score DeWitt, that the Cobras pulled back ahead for good.
Isabelle Mullen got the nod in game two, going four innings and giving up five runs with six strikeouts on the day. Goodman would get the win after coming on in relief on Mullen in the fifth inning, tossing two scoreless innings with one strikeout to move to 3-0 on the season. Forehand picked up her second save of the day, and her conference-leading fourth of the year after closing out the seventh and punching out a pair of batters to end the game.
The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 27) when they host North Greenville starting at 1:00 PM.
