Cobras Drop Two At Anderson to Open Conference Play

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Coker College softball team fell to the Anderson University Trojans on Saturday (Mar. 18) in a pair of South Atlantic Conference games. Anderson won the opener 5-0, then completed the sweep with a 4-3 win in game two. 

In game one, the Cobras could only manage one hit in the 5-0 shutout. Kelsi Bachmann led the way, going 1-for-3 at the dish.

In the circle Christine Carver (5-2) was hit with the loss. She allowed five earned runs on four hits in three innings. Nikki Linthicum came on in relief, allowing no hits and only walking one batter in three innings.

In game two, the Cobras plated a run in the top of the first inning, thanks to an RBI double by Tayler Barcomb. The Trojans responded in the second with a run of their own to tie it up at 1-1. In the top of the third inning with two outs, Maria Williamson blasted a home run to left field to put the Navy and Gold ahead by 2-1. Coker plated another run in the top of the fifth, as Williamson doubled to score Cacey Simmons and lift the Coker lead to 3-1. Home runs by Anderson in the sixth and seventh innings would do the Cobras in and give Anderson the 4-3 win.

Williamson led the way for the Cobras, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and a double. She finished with two RBI. Simmons also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Bachmann and Barcomb also collected hits in game two.

Tabitha Allen (6-3) was hit with the loss. She allowed one run on one hit. Taylor Forehand started and went 5.1 innings. She allowed three earned runs on five hits. Linthicum also made a relief appearance, allowing no hits in two-thirds of an inning.

The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 22) to welcome Queens for a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader. Game times are set for 2 and 4 p.m.
