Cobras Fall to Royals in SAC Doubleheader

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Coker College softball team lost a pair of South Atlantic Conference road games on Tuesday (Mar. 22) to the Queens University of Charlotte Royals. The Cobras dropped game one 8-3, then fell 4-3 in an eight-inning game two. 

In game one, Queens struck first, plating two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Coker responded in the top of the fourth with three runs of their own, thanks to a two-run homerun by Makayla Shore and an RBI-single by Ashley Gallman. However, Queens responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth and fifth inning to take the eventual 8-3 win.

Shore finished game one 1-for-3 with a homerun and two RBIs. Gallman went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Mindy North finished a perfect 3-for-3, while Courtney Boan, Tayler Barcomb and Carylann Geddes each notched a hit.

Augusta Jackson was tagged with the loss. She scattered four earned runs on nine hits in five innings, while striking out five.

In game two, it was the Navy and Gold that struck first when Maria Williamson belted a three-run homerun to left centerfield, giving Coker a 3-0 lead. Queens plated one run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to force extra innings. The Royals kept their momentum rolling, plating the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the 4-3 win.

Williamson led the way, going 1-for-4 with a homerun and three RBIs. Barcomb went 2-for-4, while Gallman, North, Boan and Allyson High all slashed hits as well.

Taylor Forehand was hit with the loss. She scattered three earned runs on nine hits in a complete game effort.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Mar. 26) when they travel to Harrogate, Tenn. to take on the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters in a SAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
