Cobras Split Non-Conference Twinbill Against Limestone

GAFFENEY, S.C. – The Coker College softball team went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 12) in a non-conference doubleheader against the Limestone College Saints. In game one, the Cobras pulled out a 5-1 win. In game two, the Cobras fell in a 2-1 pitcher's duel. 

In the opener, the Navy and Gold struck first in the top of the first inning. Singles by Riley Morris and Ashley Gallman placed runners on the corners with one out and Allyson High stepping to the plate. The freshman reached base thanks to an error by the centerfielder, scoring Morris and giving Coker the 1-0 lead. Coker plated another in the second inning after a double-steal by Morris and Breana Ard scored Ard from third. The Saints responded with a run in the bottom of the second, cutting the Coker lead to 2-1. After a scoreless third and fourth inning, the Cobras plated a pair of insurance runs thanks to the two-RBI single to center field by Maria Williamson. Morris's RBI single in the sixth inning capped off the Coker 5-1 win in the opener.

Morris and Tayler Barcomb each had multi-hit games, Morris going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, while Barcomb finished 2-for-4 with one run scored. Williamson finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Gallman, and Courtney Boan each picked up a hit as well.

Tabitha Allen notched her fourth win of the season. She scattered five hits and one run in five innings of work. Taylor Forehand threw a perfect two innings in relief.

In game two, the Cobras plated a run in the top of the first inning. After a walk and a stolen base by Morris, High reached base after an error by the shortstop, scoring Morris. However, Limestone scored runs in the fourth and fifth inning and Coker could only muster up two hits on the afternoon, giving the Saints a 2-1 win.

Mindy North and High each went 1-for-3 in the latter game to lead the way.

In the circle, Forehand scattered four hits and no earned runs in a complete game effort.

The Cobras will stay on the road, as they travel to Augusta, Ga. to take on the Augusta University Jaguars in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
