Cobras Drop Two on Opening Day of Spring Tournament

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team lost their opening two games on day one of the Coker College Spring Tournament. In game one, the Cobras were on the losing end of pitcher's duel with West Virginia State, losing 2-0. The Cobras dropped game two to Charleston University, 6-4.

In game one, runs scored by West Virginia State in the third and fifth inning would be the difference in the 2-0 final.

Riley Morris led the Coker offense, going 2-for-3. Breana Ard, Maria Williamson and Carley Bailey rounded things out for the Cobras, going 1-for-3 each.

Tabitha Allen (3-3) was hit with the loss. She scattered six hits and one earned run in a complete game effort.

In game two, Charleston (W.V.) opened up an early 3-0 lead in the first three innings. However, the Navy and Gold would respond in the bottom half of the third. After a pair of singles by Hannah Price and Bailey, Ashley Gallman stepped to the plate and belted a three-run home run to tie the game up at 3-3. After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, the Golden Eagles plated three in the top of the sixth. An RBI single by Gallman in the bottom of the seventh would give the Cobras some life, but that would be as far as the Coker comeback would go as Charleston took home the 6-4 win.

Gallman led the way, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a homerun. Bailey also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Price, Tayler Barcomb, Makayla Shore, Courtney Boan and Mindy North all picked up a hit as well.

Augusta Jackson (2-1) was tagged with the loss. She went five and a third innings, giving up four earned runs and seven hits.

The Cobras will be back in action tomorrow (Feb. 27) to take on the King University Tornado. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
