Cobras Drop Two Against Crusaders

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team fell to the North Greenville University Crusaders on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 20) in a non-conference doubleheader. The Cobras dropped game one 2-1, then fell in game two by the same score in eight innings.

In the opener, NGU struck first, plating runs in the second and fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead after four innings. After a single by Carley Bailey, Corrine Stiles stepped to the plate and slashed a double to center field, scoring Bailey all the way from first to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Navy and Gold's best chance to score came in the seventh when Riley Morris led the top half of the inning off with a double. After advancing to third on an error, Coker had runs on the second and third with one out. However, two lineouts stalled the Coker comeback effort and gave North Greenville the 2-1 win.

Tayler Barcomb led the way, going 2-for-2 at the plate. Stiles, Morris and Bailey all went 1-for-3, with Stiles picking up an RBI.

Tabitha Allen (3-2) was hit with the loss. She scattered eight hits and zero earned runs in a complete game effort.

Game two saw another pitching dual with neither team scoring through the first five innings. However, the Cobras would strike first in the top of the sixth inning. Courtney Boan drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a stolen base to get the inning started. After a advancing to third on a ground out, Ashley Gallman stepped to the plate and scored Boan on an infield single, giving Coker the 1-0 lead. The Crusaders responded with RBI singles in the seventh and eighth inning however, giving them another 2-1 victory.

Gallman led the Cobras offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Boan, Hannah Price, Carylann Geddes and Makayla Shore all recorded a hit as well.

Taylor Forehand (2-2) picked up the loss, scattering four hits and one earned run over three innings.

The Cobras will be back in action on Feb. 26-28 for the Coker Spring Tournament at Byerly Park.
