Cobras Split DH in SAC Opener Against Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN – The Coker softball team split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Carson-Newman on Saturday (Mar. 15).  The Cobras now sit at 12-9 on the year and 1-1 in league play.

Game number one for the Cobras featured a come from behind win, as Coker battled their way back from a 4-0 deficit.  Carson-Newman struck first, scoring one run in the top of the first followed by three more runs in the second.

Katelyn Szupello got the scoring started for the Navy and Yellow, after she drove in three RBI's with a bases loaded double.  Szupello came through again late in the seventh inning for the Cobras when she drove in the game tying RBI with a single.  Sydney Weatherford would take care of the rest with a triple to right field, to put the Cobras up two runs.  In the bottom of the seventh the Eagles would threaten with two base runners, but the Coker defense would hold strong to preserve the 6-4 win.

Lauren Phillips (7-4) would earn the win after going seven innings with four strikeouts, and allowing just four runs on seven hits.

In game number two, Coker found themselves playing catch up again as Carson-Newman quickly went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second.  The Cobras had their best opportunity to score in the top of the fourth, after Weatherford hit a double to put Tyresha Ellis on third.  Unfortunately, Coker could not take advantage of the opportunity and eventually fell to the Eagles by a score of 4-0.

Logan Cox (1-1) would be marked with the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits, after 5.1 innings of work.

Coker will return home to host Edinboro on Monday (Mar. 17) in a non conference doubleheader.  Game number one will start at 2:00 p.m., followed by game two at 4:00.
