Coker Softball Sweeps Barton in Double-Header Action
Coker swept the Barton Bulldogs on Saturday (Mar.), in Conference Carolinas action.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker softball team earned their first two conference wins of the season on Saturday (Mar. 2), when they swept the Barton College Bulldogs in a double-header. With the wins the Cobras improve to 6-4 on the year and 2-0 in Conference Carolinas play.
The first game saw little action, until the bottom of the fifth inning. Coker started off earning two quick runs to earn a slight 2-0 advantage. Then with one out and the bases loaded, Sydney Weatherford stepped up to the plate and crushed a grand slam to left field.
Coker's defense would then shutout the Bulldogs in the sixth inning, and collect two more runs to earn the 8-0 victory.
The second game started much like the first, but the game would eventually extend into extra innings.
With the international rule in effect, both teams would have runners placed on second during the start of the eighth inning. After a three up, three down defensive inning for the Cobras, the navy and yellow had the opportunity for the walk-of-run in the bottom of the eight.
With one out and Weatherford on first, Jaclin Poole stepped to the plate and delivered a shot into left center. Weatherford quickly advanced around the bases to score, giving the Coker the 1-0 win.
Lauren Phillips earned the win in the first game, advancing her to a 3-2 record on the year. Phillips had four strikeouts, and only gave up three hits. Breanna Skipper got the start and the win in game two. Skipper goes to 3-1 on the year after mowing down four hitters, and only giving up two hits.
Coker will be back in action this Tuesday (Mar. 5), against North Greenville. The first game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m., followed by the second game at 4:00 p.m.
Player of the Game: Sydney Weatherford.
